Good Intentions

The truly righteous man attains life, but he who pursues evil goes to his death

~ Proverbs 11:19

No one has the ambition to become an alcoholic, a criminal or a failure in life.  Every alcoholic used to be a moderate drinker, every criminal thought that he could cheat and steal without being caught out.  People who commit social sins, always try to hide them.

Harmful and eventually destructive habits do not assault your character brutally.  If they did, you would immediately reject them.  They begin with a minor and harmless gesture that has pleasant results.  As the pleasure increases, you may think that you are still in control, until you suddenly realise that it has become impossible to resist the temptation in your own strength.

It is important to identify an addictive habit in advance.  This is also where the acceptance of the Living Christ is invaluable in your life.  His Holy Spirit gives you the perception that makes you sensitive to the habit-forming powers of the evil one and He also gives you the spiritual power to enable you to say “NO!” to the slightest indication of evil.

When temptation beckons the first time and offers you illicit pleasure, pause a moment and ask yourself where this will lead you eventually.  It will only take a second of your time to do this.Don’t collude in matters that could cause your downfall.  Reject them while you still have the strength to do so, and remain true to God as well as yourself and those who love you.  If you find you are still battling…. phone a friend that you trust, and pray together (there is power when two or three stand together in agreement) and if that is not possible, PRAY on your own!

Praying to be protected from temptations and then still rushing into them

is like putting your finger in the fire and praying

that it will not burn!
