Close to God – The reason for the Season

Star of Bethlehem

Christmas-time (the month of December) is Advent-time! The term “advent” derives from the Latin word “adventuske”, which means “arrival” or “appearance”.  In the terminology of the general church it is used to refer to the four weeks preceding Christmas:  the joyous time when we commemorate the coming of Christ to this world of Humanity.  The Light Christ became ‘flesh’, but without sin.  We are also flesh, but in our case the word carries the blemish of our “sinful nature”.  From the Word – and from experience, we know that the flesh is in a constant battle with the spirit.  Paul says in Romans 8:7 that the mind-set on the flesh is hostile to God. And, so it is!

For Christ, however the blemish of sin falls away.  As a human being, He was without sin, but still human in the tarnished form of a servant.  He became our equal in everything except in sin!.  This is the glorious message of Christmas – Emmanuel! God with US!  God visits man personally.  He descended from heaven in his Son to prepare the way for humankind to be restored in the favour of the Father.  He came to be the Redeemer of a lost world.

First is was God above – God far from us, then he became, in Christ, God with us, and then, through the Holy Spirit, God in us!

This is the secret of the divine Christmas Eve and the reason for our inexpressibly joy at Christmas. May the time of

Advent (December month)  truly be a feast of “Christ for you”.

You can never truly enjoy Christmas before you have looked up into the countenance of God

and honestly told Him that you have accepted His Christmas Gift!
