Christmas: The Christ Child
At Christmas-time we all become children once again. (Well, I do ….) In our hearts we relive the timeless adventure of unquestioned faith, where all things are immediately possible and where the child Jesus is in the centre of everything. The stable is transformed into a palace and kings from the east kneel in worship before the King of kings.
For a short time, as in a dream, we leave our predictable way of life and walk the path of rich imagination, of amazement and exciting joy, while we freely rejoice in the immeasurable love of God. Even the staunchest spiritual realist experiences stirrings in his/her heart upon hearing the age-old tale, almost smelling the fragrances of incense and myrrh.
On the other hand, Christmas-time is also as real as the gifts that we give and receive, as real as the candles we light and the lights that charm us, as real as the bread we break in love with our dear ones, as real as the songs that we hear everywhere during this wonderful time. In experiencing the mystery surrounding Christmas as well as the concrete reality thereof, we are all touched by the wonder of God’s love – and our dreams of peace and joy are rekindled.
If we have forgotten how to experience Christmas like a child, with joyful and excited expectation, we have to learn anew to discover the enchantment of Christmas.
It is good sometimes to become a child again, and never better than at Christmas, the time when
our mighty Creator Himself became a child.
~ Charles Dickens ~
