From the Star of Bethlehem to The Word
The wise men were initially guided by a star, but when they arrived in Jerusalem, the Word of God lit their path to Christ. In Jerusalem, everyone was expecting a King, but they did not know where to find Him. The teachers of the law were reflecting on the meaning of the Word of God. This must have seemed like regression to the wise men, away from the shining star to the mouldy study of books 🙂
We find the wise men with their star but without a Book, and the people of Israel with the Word but without their King – a King without an address. So, what did they do, they returned to the Word with its irrefutable authority.
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel …” to Bethlehem then – to the small city of great things!
The star is therefore subservient to the Word! When the gilt is gone, the truth and reality is still there in the Word. Emotion and romanticism evaporate and the Word of God triumphs. Hence, the final journey to Bethlehem is always a journey based on the Word of God. We love the starts and it is hard to part with them, but we must! We need the Scriptures, the, at times, disillusioning, provocative, tormenting, but always purely prophetic Scriptures. The stars without the Scriptures leave us with an insatiable longing for eternity and without the correct address of our King. The Word guides us to the true gold-reef, to Bethlehem, to the stable, the manger and the King.
People may gather knowledge, but wisdom is a gift that comes directly from God!
